San Antonio – Braxton Watson tossed a 10-inning complete game to lead the way on the mound, while Ryan Morrow drove home the game winning run as St. Mary’s University split a doubleheader with the University of the Incarnate Word, 3-2, 0-1, in Heartland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.
Watson (Sr., Spring) allowed just two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out eight in the complete game effort. He had a shutout going into the seventh inning, but allowed two runs to force extra innings. He allowed just two baserunners in the three extra innings to improve to 6-2. Morrow (So., Bulverde) made Watson’s pitching stand up. In the fifth inning Morrow smacked a double down the leftfield line to give the Rattlers a 2-0 lead. He then ended the game with a two-out, RBI single to center, scoring Weston Baros (So., San Antonio).
In the second game Scott Shimek (Sr., Shiner) and Chris Armijo engaged in a classic pitcher’s duel. The two teams combined for just five hits. The game was decided in the fifth inning when Josiah Rodriguez doubled and later scored on a wild pitch by Shimek. Shimek allowed just one run on four hits and four walks, while striking out two to fall to 9-2. Armijo allowed just one hit and one walk, while striking out five to improve to 10-0 this season.
With the split St. Mary’s is now 31-15 overall, 27-12 in Heartland Conference play this season. UIW is 31-14, 27-11. The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a single game starting at 1 p.m.
