San Antonio – Five St. Mary’s University volleyball players had 10 or more kills and the Rattlers totaled 65 kills as a team, but the University of Texas of the Permian Basin held off the Rattlers, 25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 20-25, 15-11, in a Heartland Conference volleyball match Thursday night at the Falcon Dome. The Rattler women’s soccer team also dropped a close decision, falling 2-1 in overtime at Dallas Baptist University.

The Rattlers fell behind two games to none against the Falcons in volleyball, before rallying in the third and fourth games. Katelyn Kershner (Jr., San Antonio) led the way with 12 kills and had 10 digs to post a double-double. She was one of three Rattlers to have a double-double in the match. Setter Allie Murray (Fr., San Antonio) had a season-best with 23 digs and added 29 assists for the double-double. Mallory Moeller (So., Seguin) had her best match as a Rattler, picking up 11 kills and a team-best six blocks. Luisa Rodriguez (Jr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil) also had a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs.

After falling behind two sets to none, the Rattlers took control, winning the third and fourth sets decisively to send the match to a deciding fifth set. St. Mary’s took the early lead at 6-3 and was tied with the Falcons at 10-10. But UTPB scored five of the final six points to win the set and the match.

The women’s soccer team remained winless on the season as Kourney Edwards scored in the 102nd minute of the game off a corner kick to drop the Rattlers to 0-7-1 overall, 0-1 in Heartland Conference play this season. DBU improved to 3-5-1, 2-0. St. Mary’s will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Texas-Permian Basin for a Heartland Conference game starting at 2 p.m. Melinda Gentry (Jr., Plano) scored her second goal of the season in the loss.
