San Antonio – Brittany Layne scored the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute, lifting Dallas Baptist University to a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s University in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Field. In volleyball action, the Rattlers also fell to DBU, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19 at Bill Greehey Arena.

For the Rattler women’s soccer team, the game was a slugfest throughout. A total of 29 shots were taken by the two teams, with DBU taking 16 and St. Mary’s with 13. The difference in the game was a give-and-go play with 2:48 left in the first half. Brittany Layne passed the ball to Sarah Meierhofer, who then gave the ball back to streaking Layne. Layne smacked a shot into the right post, deflecting into the net.

In the second half, the two teams combined for 17 shots, but neither DBU goalkeeper Haley Corbell or Rattler keeper Mari Edwards (Fr., Apex, N.C.) gave up a goal in the second period. Edwards made five saves in the game for St. Mary’s.

With the loss, the Rattlers saw their two-game win streak end and they now stand at 3-10-1 overall, 3-4-0 in Heartland Conference play. DBU improved to 5-9-1, 4-4-0. The Rattlers will face St. Edward’s on Wednesday in Austin at 3 p.m. in their next game.

In the volleyball match, the Rattlers took the lead in all three sets, but couldn’t hold on. There were a total of 24 ties and 13 lead changes in the match, but the Rattlers were not able to win a set against the Patriots. Katelyn Kershner (Jr., San Antonio) led the Rattlers with 12 kills and seven digs, while Kirsten Chapman (So., Jourdanton) had 10 kills and three blocks.

With the loss, the volleyball team is now 4-19, 3-6. DUB improved to 12-13, 5-3. St. Mary’s will return to action on Oct. 22 when they travel to Wichita, Kan., to face Newman University at 7 p.m. in a Heartland Conference game.
