San Antonio – St. Mary’s University senior men’s tennis player Vitas Van Dijk was named College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District for his work in the classroom and on the tennis court.

Van Dijk (Jr., Paramaribo, Suriname) has helped the Rattler men’s tennis program to resurgence over the last two years, winning a total of 36 combined singles and doubles matches. During the 2008-2009 season he went 9-10 in singles, playing primarily at number one. He also had a 10-10 mark playing at number one and number two doubles.

Off the court Van Dijk has been even more outstanding, producing a 3.85 grade point average in mathematics. The academic all-district award is the first for Van Dijk, who was also named to the Heartland Conference President’s Honor Roll. He is also a member of the Dean’s List at St. Mary’s University.

St. Mary’s finished the 2009 season with a 7-9 record, their best mark since the 2001-2002 season. The Rattlers advanced to the Heartland Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
