TAHLEQUAH, Okla.–Matt Vela shot a final round 71 to place third individually, helping the St. Mary’s University men’s golf team to a third place finish at the Northeastern State University Golf Classic, Tuesday at the Emerald Falls Golf Course.

Vela (Jr., San Antonio) fired a first round 74, then followed that up wtih his one-under par 71 final round. He finished three strokes behind Justin Yoder of the University of Central Missouri and Josh Boswell of Northeastern State University. Yoder defeated Boswell in a playoff. Both players finished with two-under par totals of 142.

Sam Jernigan (So., San Antonio) placed 11th overall for the Rattlers, finishing with a two-round total of 152 (80-72). Jeff Rein (Jr., Garden Ridge) was 20th with a 154 (79-75), Tim Paiz (Fr., San Antonio) was 41st with a 158 (79-79), James Grant (Sr., San Antonio) placed 53rd with a 161 (80-81) and Jacob Torans (Fr., Devine) was 82nd with a 189 (93-96).

In the team competition, Central Missouri took the title, shooting a two-round total of 595, to defeat host Northeastern State by 11 strokes. St. Mary’s was third with a 609, three strokes behind NSU. Missouri Southern State University and Grand Canyon University were tied for fourth at 611, while Our Lady of the Lake University was sixth with a 616.

The Rattlers will return to action on Monday, Sept. 28, when they host the Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational at The Dominion Golf Course in San Antonio.
