On Friday, May 8, 2009, as part of the Spring 2009 Commencement Exercises, seven St. Mary’s ROTC graduating senior cadets (two from the University of Incarnate Word) were commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army during a time honored traditional ceremony.

The ceremony included the cadets being sworn in and taking an oath of office, they were then pinned with their insignia’s by family members and given their first salute as a Second Lieutenant by an officer of their choice.

St. Mary’s University has a long history of support and collaboration with the military. Including members of the spring 2009 graduates, the ROTC program has commissioned 1,494 officers for service in the military. The University has more than 20 alumni who have achieved the rank of general or admiral in the U.S. armed forces.
