San Antonio – Chelsea Wenske smashed a game-winning three-run homerun in the first game, while Arlynda Flores pitched and hit St. Mary’s University to the win in the second, helping the Rattlers to a perfect start to their season Friday on the first day of the St. Mary’s Division II Collegiate Classic Softball Tournament at the San Antonio ISD Spring Sports Complex.

In the first game the Rattlers rallied from an early deficit and took a 3-2 lead into the top of the seventh inning. But Eastern New Mexico University scored two unearned runs to take a 4-3 lead. Sade Moore (Sr., Angleton) walked to lead off and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Michelle Soto (Fr., San Antonio) reached on a fielder’s choice, bringing up Wenske (So., Victoria). Wenske took a pitch from Kimberly Crouse and drove it over the wall in right center for a walk-off, three-run, game-winning homerun. Soto picked up her first collegiate win in relief on the mound.

Flores (Jr., Uvalde) was the story of game two as she picked up the win on the mound and smashed her first homerun of the season at the plate. Flores allowed just seven hits and two walks over seven innings, while striking out two to earn her first win as a Rattler on the mound. At the plate she went 2-for-2 with a double, homerun, four RBI and a run scored.

St. Mary’s is the only 2-0 team at the tournament after the first day. Play will continue all day Friday at the San Antonio ISD Spring Sports Complex, starting at 9 a.m. There will be a total of 15 games on Friday, with 12 more games on Saturday. St. Mary’s will play 8th-ranked Southeastern Oklahoma State University at 1:30 p.m., then Texas Woman’s University at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.
