San Antonio – Taryn Munoz and Arlynda Flores each tossed shutouts on the mound, while Flores had five hits at the plate, helping St. Mary’s to a sweep of the University of the Incarnate Word, 9-0, 9-0, in Heartland Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Field.

In the first game of the day the Rattlers wasted no time taking control. Kelly Baker (So., Arlington) smacked a three-run homerun to center, giving the Rattlers the early lead. In the third inning St. Mary’s put the game away. Flores (Jr., Uvalde), Sade Moore (Sr., Angleton), Lauren Miller (So., Baytown) and Nikki Flores (Sr., Friendswood) all had run-scoring base hits as the Rattlers took a 9-0 lead.

From there Flores scattered seven hits and two walks over five innings to improve to 13-12 this season. The shutout was her third of the season.

In the second game Munoz (Jr., Bulverde) was even better on the mound, allowing just two hits and two walks in tossing her third shutout of the season. Munoz improved to 16-16 with the win. At the plate Flores went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Moore, Chelsea Wenske (So., Shiner) and Jenna Saucedo (Sr., Elmendorf) all added two base hits in the second game.

With the sweep St. Mary’s improved to 30-30 overall and 21-7 in Heartland Conference play. UIW fell to 26-31, 19-9. The Rattlers secured the second seed in the upcoming Heartland Conference Tournament with the sweep, while UIW finished third in the league. St. Mary’s will start tournament play on Thursday afternoon at Rattler Field.
