San Antonio – St. Mary’s University baseball player Scott Shimek was named Heartland Conference Pitcher of the week for his play last week against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Shimek (Sr., Shiner) won his second start of the season, tossing a four-hit complete game to remain undefeated this season. The reigning Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Year struck out five and didn’t allow a runner past second base after the first inning of the game. Shimek is now 2-0 this season with a 0.69 ERA. He has 13 strikeouts in 13 innings and has allowed just seven hits.

For the Rattlers the award marked the second straight week that the Rattlers have had the Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week. Courtney Behrend (Jr., Comfort) earned the honor last week. Michael Brzezinski (Sr., Helotes) was named Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week last week.

Shimek and the 15th-ranked Rattlers, who are 7-3 overall and 5-3 in Heartland Conference play, return to action on Friday when they host St. Edward’s University in the first doubleheader of a four-game series at 1 p.m. at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.
