Austin – Lia Provence drove in four runs and St. Mary’s University took advantage of six St. Edward’s University errors for a 14-10 win in game two of their Heartland Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Diane Daniels Field.

The Rattlers broke out on top early, with six runs in the second inning, helped by four St. Edward’s errors. Provence (So., Bastrop) completed the run with a two-run triple to give the Rattlers a 6-0 lead. However, the Hilltoppers responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead 7-6.

But the Rattlers came right back with two runs the next inning when Heather Monroe (Jr., New Braunfels) smacked her third homerun of the season. Two innings later the Rattlers extended their lead to five runs, keyed again by Provence, who smacked a two-run double to complete the rally. St. Mary’s extended the lead to 14-8 with two runs in the sixth. From there, Taryn Munoz (Jr., Bulverde) and Michelle Soto (Fr., San Antonio) combined to hold the Hilltoppers in check. Munoz improved to 11-11 with the win.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Hilltoppers Paige Sandahl tossed her second straight one-hitter against the Rattlers in a 10-1 win. Arlynda Flores (Jr., Uvalde) broke up Sandahl’s no-hitter in the sixth with her 15th homerun of the season.

With the split the Rattlers are now 20-23 overall and 12-4 in Heartland Conference play, just one game behind both St. Edward’s and University of Incarnate Word, who are both 13-3. The Hilltoppers are 24-17 overall. The Rattlers will return to action on Wednesday when they host Texas A&M University-Kingsville in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. at Rattler Field.
