San Antonio – Marcin Marczewski and Marcos Villarreal each picked up singles and doubles victories, but Dallas Baptist won two of three doubles matches and defeated St. Mary’s University, 5-3, in the first round of the Heartland Conference men’s tennis tournament Friday afternoon at the University of the Incarnate Word Tennis Courts.

Marzcezyski (Fr., Gwiazozista, Poland) played at number one in singles for the first time this season. Despite that he rolled to a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Brett Sticker to improve to 15-4 this season. At number three singles Marcos Villarreal (Jr., Corpus Christi) rallied from a set down to defeat Richard Vo, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Villarreal has the second best singles record on the squad, with a 12-6 mark. The pair also teamed up to win at number one doubles, 8-4, over Sticker and Bronson Vaughan.

At number four singles Drew Zemanek (So., La Porte) won the first set 6-4, but dropped the next two sets 6-4, 6-4.

St. Mary’s finished the 2009 season with a 7-9 record, their best mark since the 2001-2002 season. DBU improved to 6-10 with the win. Marczewski was named STMU Player of the Year, while Mathew Carrion was picked as the Most Improved Player.

“I felt that most of the guys gave a tough fight,” assistant coach Burke Marold said. “We will be back next year even tougher.”
