ALLENDALE, Mich. – Sam Jernigan fired a final round 72 to finish 28th individually, helping St. Mary’s University to an 11th place finish at the 2009 NCAA Division II Men’s Midwest/South Central Regional, held Wednesday at The Meadows Golf Course.

Jernigan (Fr., San Antonio) rebounded from a tough second round to fire a steady, one-over par 72 in the final round. He shot an opening round 70 and had a 221 for the tournament (70-79-72). Steve Cuzzort of Wayne State University took medalist honors with a three-round total of 206 (67-69-70), while Justin Hueber of the University of Indianapolis was four strokes back at 210 (73-65-72).

Matt Vela (So., San Antonio) finished 50th overall with a 224 (75-75-74), Preston Akromis (Sr., San Antonio) was 60th with a 226 (75-74-77), Jeff Rein (So., Garden Ridge) was 70th with a 228 (76-74-78) and Alex Maurer (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) was 88th with a 231 (80-76-75).

In the team standings Wayne State took the title with a three-round total of 859 (278-284-297). Northeastern State University took second place with an 865 (291-281-293), Central Missouri University was third with an 871 (287-295-289), while St. Mary’s was 11th with an 893 (296-299-298).

With the result the Rattlers 2009 season came to an end. St. Mary’s won the 2009 Heartland Conference Tournament Championship, with Rein taking medalist honors.
