San Antonio – St. Mary’s University used a dominant post game to control play throughout and rolled past Southwestern College, 96-61, in non-conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena.

Six different Rattlers scored in double figures, including four post players. As a team St. Mary’s held a 44-16 rebounding advantage and outscored the Moundbuilders 44-16 in the paint. Kevin Kotzur (Fr., La Vernia, Texas) led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds in just 22 minutes of action. His replacement, Luis Moreira (Sr., Brasilia, Brazil) topped Kotzur with 16 points and nine rebounds in 21 minutes of action. Jeremy Fonteneaux (Jr., DeSoto, Texas) had 11 points and five rebounds in just 17 minutes of action off the bench, while Brad Hubenak (Fr., Kennedale, Texas) scored 10 points and had three rebounds.

The game was competitive in the first half, thanks to six three-point buckets by the Moundbuilders, but the Rattlers ended the half with an 8-2 run, that turned they used to kick-start the second half. By the time the 22-4 run was over, the Rattlers had turned a three-point lead into a 21-point advantage with 15:28 left to play. The Moundbuilders would never get within 20 points again in the game and the Rattlers led by as much as 35 points.

As a team the Rattlers shot 62.1 percent from the field (36-58) and 87.0 percent (20-23) from the free throw line. They held SC to just 40.0 percent (22-55) shooting from the field, but allowed the Moundbuilders to make 11-of-27 three-point shots.

With the win, the Rattlers improved to 2-1 this season, while Southwestern fell to 3-4. St. Mary’s will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24, when they host Texas A&M University-Kingsville in a non-conference matchup at Bill Greehey Arena.
