San Antonio – Stephen Gamez and Daniel Kelly each scored goals, helping St. Mary’s University to a 2-0 win over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in men’s soccer action Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.

The game was played in hot and humid conditions and both teams tempers seemed to reflect that weather. A total of 42 fouls were called in the game and eight cards, including three reds were issued in the contest. All three ejections were issued to the visitors and seven of the nine cards were given to UTPB.

It looked like the game was going to go to the half scoreless, until a throw-in in the final 10 seconds. Sean Strater (Jr., Carrollton) sent a throw-in into the penalty area, which has headed on by Kyle Farrell (Sr., Edmond, Okla.) to Kelly (So., Tucson, Ariz.), who headed it to Gamez (Fr., San Antonio), who tapped it in with seven seconds left in the half for a 1-0 lead.

Kelly then iced the game in the 87th minute. Daniel Sanguietti (Jr., Tucscon, Ariz.) brought the ball over midfield, sent it ahead to Robson Pritchett (Jr., McKinney), who heel-passed the ball to a streaking Kelly, who dribbled around goalkeeper Chris Benavides for the final goal.

Brett Collier (Sr., Schertz) picked up his third shutout of the season, making two saves. The Rattlers outshot the Falcons 10-5 in the game.

With the win, the Rattlers broke a four-game losing streak and improved to 3-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Heartland Conference play this season. UTPB fell to 2-4-1, 0-3-0. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday when they host Texas A&M International University at 2:30 p.m. in a Heartland Conference matchup.
