San Antonio – The University of the Incarnate Word scored a goal in the first two minutes of the game, then scored three over the last 30 minutes to put the game away as the Cardinals defeated St. Mary’s University, 4-0, in Heartland Conference men’s soccer action Wednesday night at Benson Stadium.

Just 1:51 into the contest Jason Cunliffe took a cross from Tom Morrill and found the back of the net near the post to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. That was where the score would stay for the next 58 minutes. From there the Cardinals put away what had been a close contest with three goals over the final 30 minutes of action.

UIW outshot the Rattlers 25-4 in the game. Brett Collier (Sr., Schertz) tried to keep the Rattlers in the game, making eight saves.

With the loss, St. Mary’s fell to 4-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Heartland Conference play. Incarnate Word improved to 6-3-3, 4-0-0. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday, when they head north to Austin to face St. Edward’s University in a Heartland Conference matchup at 4 p.m.
