ODESSA–St. Mary’s University held the University of Texas of the Permian Basin to just nine points in the first half and just seven field goals for the game as the Rattlers defeated the Falcons, 49-35, in Heartland Conference men’s basketball Saturday night at the Falcon Dome.

For the men, the first half was one to forget for both teams. The halftime score stood at 13-9, with the Rattlers leading. The two teams combined for just 10 first half field goals.

But when the teams came out of the locker room, the Rattlers took over. St. Mary’s hit 65.0 percent (13-20) of their shots from the field in the second period, while continuing to completely shut down UTPB, who made just 16.7 percent (3-18). The Falcons only success in the second half came at the free throw line, where they made 20-of-26 shots.

Aaron Thomas (So., San Antonio) led the way for the Rattlers with 14 points and 4 rebounds. Curtis Mitchell (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) was the only other Rattler to score in double figures with 10 points.

With the win, St. Mary’s ended a run of five losses in six games and is now 4-6 overall, 1-1 in Heartland Conference play this season. UTPB fell to 3-6, 1-2. The Rattlers will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m., when they host Angelo State University at Bill Greehey Arena.
