San Antonio – Midwestern State University used a big second half run to turn a tight game into a runaway as the Mustangs defeated St. Mary’s University, 89-71, in non-conference men’s basketball action Saturday night at Bill Greehey Arena.

After a 38-38 tie at the half, the Mustangs came out hitting on all cylinders and never looked back. MSU made 13 of its first 17 shots in the second half and went on a 30-12 run over the first 11 minutes of the second half. St. Mary’s trailed by as much as 23 points in the second half in the loss.

Kevin Kotzur (Fr., La Vernia, Texas) led the Rattlers with 20 points and eight rebounds. He was one of five Rattlers to score in double figures. Aaron Thomas (So., San Antonio) had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Brad Hubenak (Fr., Kennedale, Texas), Darren Lee (Sr., Stockton, Calif.) and Jeremy Fonteneaux (Jr., DeSoto, Texas) all scored 10 points for the Rattlers.

Midwestern State hit on 53.3 percent of its shots from the field (32-60) and 58.6 percent (17-29) in the second half. The Rattlers made 44.6 percent of its shots (25-56) and just 33.3 percent in the second half (9-27). St. Mary’s also committed 16 turnovers.

With the loss, St. Mary’s fell to 2-4 this season and has lost three straight games. MSU improved to 5-0 with the win. The Rattlers will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 1, when they host Huston Tillotson University at 7:30 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
