San Antonio – Jenna Wessels fired a first-round 80 to tie for fifth overall individually, helping St. Mary’s University to third place after the first round of the 2008 Heartland Conference Women’s Golf Tournament, played Monday at the Golf Club of Dallas.
Wessels (So., Katy) shot a 41 on the front nine, and then followed that up with a 39 on the back nine to finish play in the first round five strokes out of the lead. Alex Smith of St. Edward’s University leads individually with a 75. Jamie Shirley of Dallas Baptist University is second at 77, Allison Kinser of St. Edward’s and Heather Wilburn of Dallas Baptist are tied for third at 79.
Amanda Anderson (Jr., San Antonio) is in 12th place with an 86, Ursula Perez (Fr., San Antonio) is 14th with an 88, Marie Hulsey (So., El Paso) and Sonya Sanchez (So., MaCamey) is 23rd with a 102.
In the team standings St. Edward’s has the lead after round one with a 321, followed by Dallas Baptist at 328. St. Mary’s is in third place with a 346, University of the Incarnate Word is fourth with a 358, Newman University is fifth with a 370 and Oklahoma Panhandle State University is sixth with a 429.
The Heartland Conference Women’s Golf Tournament will wrap up on Tuesday with the final round at the Golf Club of Dallas.
