San Antonio – St. Mary’s University men’s golfer Matt Vela was named Heartland Conference Men’s Player of the Week for his performance at the Northeastern University Golf Classic, it was announced by the league office on Friday.

Vela (So., San Antonio) fired a three-round total of 218 (70-76-72) to finish seventh overall, six strokes out of first place. Vela was tied for first at the tournament after firing an opening round 70. He has a 73.0 stroke average in two tournaments so far this season. He is the first Rattler to earn Player of the Week honors from the Heartland Conference this season.

Vela was named honorable mention All-American, first team All-South Central Region and Heartland Conference Player of the Year as a freshman in 2007-08. He had a 73.3 stroke average and finished in the top-10 in nine of 13 tournaments last season.

Vela and the Rattlers will return to action on Monday when they host the Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational, held at The Dominion Golf Club.
