AUSTIN–Matt Vela fired a second round 70 to rank ninth overall, helping St. Mary’s University to an eighth place standing after the second round of the NCAA South Central Regional, played Tuesday at Grey Stone Golf Club.

Vela (Fr., San Antonio) shot a second round, one-under-par to move into the top 10. His score tied for the second lowest round of the day, behind only overall leader Collin Mayer of St. Edward’s University, who shot a second round 65 to hold a four-stroke lead (69-65–134) after two rounds. Peter Svajlen of Cameron University is second with a two-round total of 138 (68-70).

After firing a first-round 72, Jimmy Willingham (Sr., San Antonio) slipped to a second round 77 and is tied for 20th with a 149. James Grant (So., San Antonio) rebounded with a second round 74 after a first round 81 and is tied for 38th. Alex Maurer (Jr., St. Louis) is 40th with a 156 (79-77) and Preston Akromis (Jr., San Antonio) is one stroke back at 157 (79-78).

St. Edward’s continues to lead the team standings with a two-round total of 558 (278-280), followed by Cameron with a 581 (287-294). The Rattlers are in eighth place with a total of 603 (305-298).

The Rattlers will wrap up play at the NCAA South Central Regional on Wednesday with the final round of the three-round tournament.
