San Antonio – Dustin Lemley scored the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute, lifting the University of the Incarnate Word to a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s University in Heartland Conference men’s soccer action Wednesday at Benson Stadium. The women’s soccer team fell to St. Edward’s University on Wednesday, 5-0, in Austin.

The teams battled through a windy and cold first half to a 0-0 tie. UIW broke the tie quickly in the second half as Esteban Bayona brought the ball down the right flank and then sent a cross to Lemley, who one-timed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0. That would be the only goal of the game as the Rattlers were pinned in their own side of the field for most of the second half due to the strong wind. Brett Collier (Jr., Schertz) had one of his best efforts of the season, making nine saves in goal.

With the loss, the Rattlers fell to 3-9 overall and 0-7 in Heartland Conference play this season. UIW improved to 9-5, 4-1. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday when they host the University of Texas of the Permian Basin at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field at 3 p.m.

The Hilltoppers dominated play in the women’s game, taking 18 shots, compared with the Rattlers four. It took just 2:23 for the Hilltoppers to score, as Bethany Bennett ripped the net to give SEU the 1-0 lead. In the 31st minute the Hilltoppers increased the lead to 2-0 on an own goal. That was the score at the half. St. Edward’s broke the game open with two goals in a two-minute period to open up a 4-0 lead.

With the loss, the Rattler women fell to 3-11-1 overall and 2-6 in Heartland Conference play, while SEU improved to 9-2-1 and 6-0-1. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday when they host Texas-Permian Basin at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.
