AUSTIN – Scott Shimek won his eighth straight game without a loss, while Michael Brzezinski drove in six runs as St. Mary’s University split a doubleheader against St. Edward’s University, 4-6, 15-2, in Heartland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

Shimek (Jr., Shiner) allowed just two runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out a season-high 10 in the complete game shutout. He improved to a perfect 8-0 this season with the win. The complete game was his second of the season.

The Rattlers broke game two open early and never looked back. The second inning started out innocently enough, with two outs to start things off. Then a pair of walks gave the Rattlers a spark and an error by the pitcher Brent Davis kept the inning alive. A single by Jonathon Rosfeld (Fr., San Antonio) scored the second run of the inning and a pair of walks loaded the bases. Danny Cantu (Jr., Laredo) and Daniel Soto (So., Lytle) each had run-scoring base hits, but a total of seven walks and two errors were the difference in the inning as the Rattlers posted eight runs on just three hits to take an 8-0 lead.

One inning late the Rattlers blew the game wide open when Brzezinski (Jr., Helotes) smashed a grand slam to give the Rattlers a 12-0 lead. Brzezinski finished the game driving in six runs.

In the first game of the day Braxton Watson (Jr., Spring) was the tough-luck loser, allowing just four hits, but an error led to three unearned runs as St. Edward’s won 6-4.

With the split the Rattlers are now 27-11 overall and 23-8 in Heartland Conference play. St. Edward’s is now 26-11, 24-8. The teams will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader, starting at noon in Austin.
