San Antonio – The St. Mary’s University women’s soccer team will open its home schedule this week, hosting West Texas A&M University and Northeastern State University, as the Rattlers look to pick up their first win of the season.

St. Mary’s (0-4 overall, 0-1 Heartland) has been in every game this season, but has little to show for it so far. The Rattlers are winless despite three one-goal losses. Carolina Hernandez (So., El Paso), Elizabeth Redmond (Sr., San Dimas, Calif.) and Elizabeth Hoffman (Sr., Plano) have all scored goals for the Rattlers. Roxana Carrasco (Fr., San Antonio) has a 1.55 goals-against average with 28 saves in goal. Thursday’s game at 4 p.m. against WTAMU will be the first home game of the season for St. Mary’s. They will return to action on Friday against Northeastern State at 1 p.m. in the first game of a men’s/women’s doubleheader.

St. Mary’s will face cross-town rival the University of the Incarnate Word (2-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The men’s soccer team prepares for the big game this week with some momentum. The Rattlers (1-3, 0-2) are coming off a convincing 5-1 win against Hardin-Simmons in their last outing. Five different Rattlers scored against the Cowboys to break a three-match scoreless drought. Joseph Diaz (Fr., San Antonio) had a goal and an assist for St. Mary’s in the win and was named Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his play. Brett Collier (Jr., Schertz) has been strong in net for the Rattlers, posting a 1.75 goals-against average, with 13 saves this season. St. Mary’s scheduled match Sunday against St. Edward’s University has been postponed due to scheduling conflicts arising from Hurricane Ike.

The volleyball team (3-7) will hit the road as they open Heartland Conference play this week. They will travel to Goodwell, Okla., on Thursday to face Oklahoma Panhandle State University at 7 p.m. The Rattlers will then follow that up with a match against Newman University on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Wichita, Kan. St. Mary’s is trying to break a seven-match losing streak.

The cross country team will return to action this week as they stay in town for the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The meet is hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio and is run on the Brooks City Base. Jessie Smith (Sr., Boerne) has led the Rattlers in each of their two meets this season.

The men’s golf team opened its season on Monday and Tuesday at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate, which was hosted by Abilene Christian University. The Rattlers placed 13th at the event and were paced by Alex Maurer (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.), who finished 13th overall with a two-round score of 144 (69-75). The team will return to action on Monday, Sept. 22, at the Northeastern State Invitational Tournament.

The women’s golf team was scheduled to start play this week at the Northeastern State Women’s Golf Classic, but Hurricane Ike washed out that tournament. The Rattlers will now open their season on Sept. 29 at the Dallas Baptist Invitational.
