SAN ANGELO–Ryan Bennett’s jumper with three seconds left was the difference as Angelo State University defeated St. Mary’s University, 72-70, in overtime in men’s basketball action Tuesday night at the Junell Center.

The game was a battle from the start to the finish with 16 ties and five lead changes. The final lead change came with 3:34 left in the game as Shavar Burtch hit a pair of free throws to give ASU a one-point lead at 67-66. The Rattlers came back to tie the game twice, but Bennett’s jumper gave the Rams the win.

Nick Morey (Sr., Belpre, Ohio) led the Rattlers with 23 points and eight rebounds, just missing out on his fourth straight double-double of the season. He also blocked three shots. The only other Rattler to score in double figures in the game was Darren Lee (Jr., Stockton, Calif.) with 10 points.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 5-6 this season, while Angelo State improved to 9-2. St. Mary’s will return to action on Jan. 3 when they host Dallas Baptist University in the Rattlers Heartland Conference opener at 3 p.m. in Bill Greehey Arena.
