San Antonio – Malissa Magee tossed a one-hitter and Lindsay Barnes smashed her first homerun of the season, helping ninth-ranked St. Mary’s University to a 5-1 win over Eastern New Mexico University and a split of two games at the St. Mary’s NCAA Division II College Classic Softball Tournament, Saturday afternoon at the San Antonio Independent School District Spring Sports Complex.

The Rattlers jumped out on top of the Zias with two runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Kelly Baker (Fr., San Antonio) and Jenna Saucedo (Jr., Bulverde). That was where the score would stay for the next four innings. Magee (Sr., Katy) didn’t allow a hit over the first 5 1/3 innings. ENMU finally broke through in the sixth with an unearned run to make it a one-run game. However, the Rattlers responded in the bottom of the inning as Kelcy Walker (Sr., San Antonio) hit a sacrifice fly and Barnes (Sr., San Antonio) smashed a two-run homerun to dead centerfield to give the Rattlers a comfortable margin.

Magee improved to 2-0 on the season, allowing just the unearned run on one hit and one walk, while striking out nine. Natalie Woodside fell to 0-2 with the loss.

In the late game Saturday the Rattlers dropped their first game of the season to Southeastern Oklahoma State, 9-3. The Bronchos took advantage of four Rattlers errors to score six unearned run in the game. Taryn Munoz (So., Bulverde) took the loss in the game, despite allowing just three runs over 4 1/3 innings of work.

With the split St. Mary’s is now 2-1 overall this season. The Rattlers will wrap up play in the tournament on Sunday as they take on Texas Woman’s University at 10 a.m., then follow that up with a matchup against #17 Midwestern State at noon.
