San Antonio – Mallory Roberts free kick in the 87th minute was the difference as St. Edward’s University picked up a 2-1 win against St. Mary’s University in Heartland Conference women’s soccer action Friday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.

The Hilltoppers dominated play in the second half, outshooting the Rattlers, 14-0. For 42 minutes the Rattlers were able to hold off the Hilltoppers, but Roberts took a shot from 30 yards out, just outside the penalty area from outside the left side of the penalty area. The ball was sent arcing towards the far side of the net, bounced twice and went in without anyone from either team touching it.

The goal overshadowed a strong performance in goal by Roxana Carrasco (Fr., El Paso). Carrasco made four saves and numerous other plays to keep the game tied through most of the second half. Elizabeth Redmond (Sr., San Dimas, Calif.) and Ashley Condrin (Fr., Trophy Club) also had strong performances on defense for the Rattlers.

The Hilltoppers struck first in the game as Kim Abott took a pass in the box from Aimee Langlinais and tapped it in for a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. The Rattlers tied the score in the 43rd minute when a Hilltopper defender handled the ball in the penalty area for a penalty kick. Sarah Linares (Jr., Helotes) put the kick, tying the game at 1-1. The goal was Linares first this season.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 1-7-1 overall and 0-3 in Heartland Conference play. St. Edward’s improved to 5-2 and 2-0. St. Mary’s will return to action on Sunday when they host Angelo State University at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.
