San Antonio – Kim Kvapil picked up a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs, helping the University of the Incarnate Word to a 25-22, 25-15, 25-18, win over St. Mary’s University in Heartland Conference play Wednesday night at Bill Greehey Arena.

The Cardinals controlled play at the net, picking up nine blocks against just three for the Rattlers. UIW also had 38 kills against just 11 attack errors, while St. Mary’s had 27 kills against 17 errors. The Cardinals also posted eight service aces, against six for St. Mary’s.

The first set was an incredibly tight affair, with neither team leading by more than three points throughout. It also featured 14 ties and six lead changes, before back-to-back service aces by Carla Flink ended the set at 25-22. The Cardinals controlled play the last two sets, winning both in convincing fashion.

Sarah Moreno (Sr., Pearland) led the Rattlers with six kills, while Stephanie Crowell (Jr., The Woodlands). Valerie Teter (Sr., San Antonio) led the defense with 10 digs. Kvapil had 15 kills against just five errors, while making 12 digs. Edie Weise also had 10 kills and four blocks.

The match was the Rattlers “Dig for a Cure” night. The event brought in a school-record 1,000 fans and raised nearly $2,000 for Breast Cancer Research.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in Heartland Conference play, while UIW improved to 10-7 and 5-0. St. Mary’s will be off for the next nine days before hosting Heartland Conference co-leader Dallas Baptist University on Friday, Oct. 10, at Bill Greehey Arena at 7 p.m.
