San Antonio – Freshman Sam Jernigan fired a final round 73 to finish 17th individually and helped the St. Mary’s University men’s golf team to a sixth place finish at the Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational Tuesday afternoon at The Dominion County Club.

Jernigan (Fr., San Antonio) posted a top-20 finish in just his second tournament as a Rattler. He shot a three-round total of 222 (75-74-73). Tied for 17th with Jernigan was Preston Akromis (Sr., San Antonio), who fired a second round 70, but shot 77 in the final round. Taking medalist honors was Nick May of Newman University, who shot a three-round total of 210 (69-72-69). He won by three shots over Alex Moon of the University of Texas.

Matt Vela (So., San Antonio) tied for 28th overall with a 224 (75-75-74), Jadon Mehra (So., San Antonio) was 40th with a 230 (75-77-78) and Alex Maurer (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) was 56th with a 235 (83-79-73). Playing as an individual, James Grant (Jr., San Antonio) tied for 31st with a 226 (75-73-78).

In the team standings the University of Texas edged out Newman University, 875 to 878. Northeastern State University was third with an 881, Texas Wesleyan University was fourth with an 887, the University of Central Missouri was fifth with an 889 and St. Mary’s was sixth with an 893.

The Rattlers will return to action on Monday, Oct. 6, when they travel to Phoenix, Ariz., to participate in the Grand Canyon Invitational.
