San Antonio – St. Mary’s University men’s and women’s golf coach Wes Skidmore announced on Friday the signing of Alejandra Cantu and Samuel Jernigan to National Letters of Intent to join the Rattlers, starting with the 2008-09 academic year.

Cantu (Fr., Mission) will join the Rattler women’s program after four strong seasons at Mission’s Sharyland High School. Playing for coach Susan Lopez, Cantu earned four letters on the links and qualified for the regional tournament all four years she was at the school. She earned second team all-district honors as a freshman, and was a first team member all three years since. She was a two-time All-Valley selection.

Jernigan (Fr., San Antonio) has been a standout for the Ronald Reagan High School golf program the last three years. As a junior in 2007 he was the District 26-5A medalist and earned first team All-District 26-5A honors. He was also the San Antonio Junior Amateur Champion in 2007. This spring he earned all-district honors again and was named to the all-tournament team at the Texas Shootout Fall State Preview. He helped coach Brent McCuiston’s squad to the 2008 district championship, as well as the 2007 Texas Shootout Championship. Off the links he was a two-time academic all-district honoree.

St. Mary’s finished second on the men’s side and third on the women’s side in the Heartland Conference Golf Championships, completed on Tuesday in Dallas. Both teams are waiting on potential NCAA Regional berths, which will be announced next week.
