SAN MARCOS – Jessie Smith was the top finisher on the team for the second straight meet, helping St. Mary’s University to a fourth place finish at the Texas State University Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.

Smith (Sr., Boerne) covered the three-mile course in a time of 19:24 to place 14th overall in the meet. It was the second straight meet that Smith was the top finisher for the Rattlers. The top finisher in the meet was Dana Mecke of the University of Texas-San Antonio. She covered the course in 17:30. Second place was Larkin Geyer of the University of Texas in 17:47.

Amy Crissman (Jr., San Antonio) was the second Rattler finisher, placing 23rd in 20:01. Competing in her first meet as a Rattler was Justine Reilly (Fr., San Antonio), who finished 37th overall with a time of 21:04. Melissa Recio (Sr., Laredo) placed 41st overall with a time of 22:00. Katrina White (So., San Antonio) was 50th with a time of 22:48, Alyssa Alfaro (Fr., San Antonio) placed 55th in a time of 24:02 and Amanda Benavides (Sr., San Antonio) placed 60th with a time of 24:38.

In the team standings the University of Texas placed five in the top seven overall to take top honors with 23 points. The University of Texas-San Antonio finished second with 50. Host Texas State University was third with 134, St. Mary’s was fourth with 165, Texas Lutheran University was fifth with 183, St. Edward’s University was sixth with 199, Southwestern University was seventh with 203 and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin was eighth with 259.

The Rattlers will return to action on Friday, September 19 at 6:30 p.m. when they compete in the UTSA/Ricardo Romo Classic, which will be held at the Brooks City Base in San Antonio.
