San Antonio – St. Mary’s University baseball coach Charlie Migl announced on Thursday the signing of five student-athletes to national letters of intent to play for the Rattlers, starting with the 2008-09 academic year. Courtney Behrend, Mark Herrera, Alfonso Maldonado, Tyler Migl and Roy Richard all signed on with the Rattlers.

Behrend (Jr., Comfort) comes to St. Mary’s after playing last year for coach Craig McMurtry at Temple College. He posted a 5-1 record with a 3.75 ERA in 50.1 innings for the Leopards. He helped lead Temple to the regional tournament. In 2007 he played for coach Whoa Dill at Navarro College, helping lead Navarro to the regional tournament. Prior to his time in college Behrend was a three-time all-district honoree for coach Brock Rumfield at Comfort High School. He was a three-sport athlete at Comfort, playing baseball, basketball and golf. He was named first team all-district at pitcher as a sophomore, junior and senior and earned third team all-state honors in 2005. He also helped lead CHS to a 2005 state semifinalist appearance.

Herrera (Fr., Victoria) was a standout for coach Scott Holder at Cuero High School. He was a two-time all-district honoree and helped CHS to a 34-4 record. He earned all-tournament honors at the Cuero Gobbler Classic, and the Stanley Krich Tournament. With Herrera on the team Cuero won the 2008 district and area championships and advanced to the regional quarterfinals.

Maldonado (Jr., Laredo) comes to St. Mary’s after two strong seasons at Laredo Community College, playing for coaches Chase Tidwell and Eric Gonzalez. Off the field at LCC, he was a member of the Deans List. At St. Augustine High School he was a three-sport standout, competing in baseball, basketball and cross country. On the baseball diamond he earned first team all-district honors three times and TAPPS All-State recognition twice. On the basketball court he was named first team all-district and helped the team win the district title.

Migl (Fr., San Antonio) is the son of longtime St. Mary’s baseball coach, Charlie Migl. He was a three-year standout for coach David Collenback at Sandra Day O’Connor High School prior to coming to St. Mary’s. He was a three-year letterwinner, two-time first team all-district honoree, first team all-area pick and second team all-state honoree as a senior in 2008. He helped lead O’Connor to bi-district championships in 2006 and 2008. As strong in the classroom as on the field, he was a four-year member of the Honor Roll.

Richard (Fr., Steele) was a two-time all-district honoree for coach David Smith at Byron Steele High School. Earned first team all-district honors, batting .471 with six homeruns, 34 RBI and 41 stolen bases as a senior in 2008. He also helped lead SHS to the postseason in 2008. Played football as well for the Knights, earning all-district honors at safety. He also helped lead Steele to the area finals on the gridiron.

The signees are the first five for the Rattlers this offseason. The Rattlers finished the 2008 regular season with a 39-17 overall record and a 35-14 mark in Heartland Conference play, good for second place in the league standings. The Rattlers finished the season by winning eight of their last nine games.
