San Antonio – Twelfth ranked St. Edward’s University scored three first half goals, then held off a second half charge by St. Mary’s University for a 5-1 win in Heartland Conference men’s soccer action Friday afternoon at St. Mary’s Soccer Field.

St. Edward’s was actually outshot by St. Mary’s 14-13 and the Rattlers took eight corner kicks to just three for the Hilltoppers. Trailing 3-1 at the half, St. Mary’s outshot St. Edward’s 7-1 over the first 39 minutes of the second half and took seven corner kicks to just two for SEU. But Hilltopper goalkeeper Matt Moore came up big with five saves, four of which came in the second half. Kevin Klaus and Jorge Vega put the game out of reach with goals in the final six minutes.

The Rattlers lone goal of the game was the first career goal for Joaquin Rangel (So., Houston) in the 41st minute. Rangel headed the ball in off a free kick by Sean Strater (So., Carrollton) to cut the Hilltopper lead to just 2-1. But the Hilltoppers responded with a goal 1:16 later and the score was 3-1 at the break.

St. Mary’s fell to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in Heartland Conference play this season with the loss. St. Edward’s improved to 11-2, 5-0. The Rattlers will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Laredo to face Texas A&M International University at 7 p.m.
