San Antonio – St. Mary’s University junior catcher Kelcy Walker was named Heartland Conference Softball Hitter of the Week for her play last week, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday. It was the second time this season that Walker has been honored by the league.

Walker (Jr., San Antonio) continued her torrid hitting of late, batting .562 with two doubles, two triples, four RBI and three runs scored last week against Angelo State University and the University of the Incarnate Word. She had hits in all four games, including a pair of three-hit games. She went 3-of-8 against fourth-ranked Angelo State in a doubleheader Wednesday, and then followed that up by going 3-of-4 in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday against Incarnate Word. She went 3-of-4 with a double, triple, two RBI and a run scored, just missing on hitting for the cycle in the final game of the series.

For the season Walker is hitting .394, second best in the Heartland, with 13 doubles, three triples, 10 homeruns, 45 RBI and 48 runs scored in 54 games.

The honor was the fourth time this season that a Rattler has been named Hitter of the Week by the Heartland Conference. Walker earned that recognition for the first week of the season, while Lindsay Barnes (Jr., San Antonio) and Ashley Flores (So., Friendswood) were each honored in the next two weeks. Malissa Magee (Jr., Houston) has been named HC Pitcher of the Week six times this season.

Walker and the Rattlers will return to action today in the first round of the Heartland Conference Softball Tournament, which will be held at Rattler Field on the campus of St. Mary’s University. The Rattlers will play the winner of the Montana State University-Billings-Oklahoma Panhandle State University game. First pitch for St. Mary’s will be at 6:30 p.m.
