San Antonio–Brandy Watts third goal of the game in the 10th minute of overtime was the difference as the University of Texas of the Permian Basin defeated St. Mary’s University, 3-2, in Heartland Conference women’s soccer action Thursday afternoon at St. Mary’s Soccer Field.

The Rattlers took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Lauren Scally (Fr., Rhome) and Carolina Hernandez (Fr., El Paso) with less than 40 minutes left in the match. Watts then scored for the first time in the 55th minute on a shot going from the right side of the net to the left that went off the hands of Sarah Linares (So., San Antonio), who came on in relief in the net for St. Mary’s.  Watts then scored on a deflection in the box in the 86th minute to tie the game and send it into overtime. That set up the game winner by Watts in the 10th minute of overtime as she stole the ball in the Rattlers defensive end, dribbled in and beat Linares to the left corner of the net for the win.

The Rattlers controlled play for most of the match, outshooting the Falcons 28-18, but could only score two goals, thanks in part to the play of keeper Stephanie Ward, who had 11 saves. Jamie Talley (Fr., Iowa Park) made one save in holding UTPB scoreless in the first half. Linares made three saves in the second half in relief.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 7-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in Heartland Conference play, while UTPB improved to 5-7-2 and 3-4-0. The Rattlers will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Dallas Baptist University at St. Mary’s Field at 4 p.m.
