AUSTIN–St. Edward’s University used an 11-0 run in the fourth game to break open a close match as the Hilltoppers defeated St. Mary’s University 30-26, 21-30, 30-28, 30-18, in Heartland Conference volleyball action Thursday night at the Recreation and Convocation Center.

The teams battled back and forth for three games and looked to have a similar game in game four when the Hilltoppers used an 11-0 run to break open a 14-13 game and take a commanding 25-13 lead. Over the first three games the teams combined for 21 ties and seven lead changes.

Samantha Weber (Sr., Fort Lupton, Colo.) led the Rattlers with 15 kills and five blocks. Kori McCarver (Fr., San Antonio) had 12 kills. For the Hilltoppers Lindsey Douglas had a match-high 21 kills and six blocks.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 7-8 overall and 2-1 in Heartland Conference play, while the Hilltoppers improved to 9-6, 2-1. St. Mary’s will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Laredo to face Texas A&M International University at 2 p.m.
