SAN ANGELO – Malissa Magee tossed a two-hitter on the mound, while Kelcy Walker and Brittany Kettinger smacked run-scoring doubles in a three-run fourth inning as St. Mary’s University defeated Western New Mexico University, 4-1, in NCAA Division II South Central Region first round action Thursday afternoon at the Angelo State University Softball Complex.

Magee (Jr., Houston) retired the first nine batters of the game before running into trouble in the fourth. She allowed a leadoff single to Cory Usher, who moved to second on a sacrifice. Antoinette Estrella then lined a single to left, allowing Usher to score. But that was all that the Mustangs would get as Magee retired the last 10 batters of the game to complete the win. Magee improved to 28-8 with the win and has won her last six starts. She allowed just one run on two hits and no walks, while striking out seven.

The Rattlers trailed 1-0 after the single run in the fourth inning. St. Mary’s didn’t waste any time in responding. Sade Moore (So., Angleton) led off the bottom of the fourth with single to center. Walker (Jr., San Antonio) followed with a double down the left field line to score Moore. One batter later Kettinger (Jr., Azle) smashed a double to the wall in center field to give the Rattlers a 2-1 lead. Lindsay Magaro (Sr., Elmendorf) then brought home Kettinger with a single to left-center to give the Rattlers a 3-1 lead.

Mary K Pederson (Jr., Houston) completed the scoring for the Rattlers an inning later when she smacked her first homerun of the season to left, giving the Rattlers a 4-1 lead. Seven different Rattlers had at least one hit in the game, led by Magaro with two base knocks.

With the win the Rattlers are now 43-16 overall and have won 18 of their last 20 games. WNMU fell to 35-19-1. St. Mary’s will play Northeastern State University at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. WNMU will play #4 Angelo State University at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
