San Antonio – St. Mary’s University softball player Lindsay Barnes was named Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week for her play during the week of Feb. 5-11, it was announced by the conference office Thursday.
Barnes (Jr., San Antonio) hit a sizzling .526 with five homeruns, 11 RBI and five runs scored as the Rattlers won their second straight tournament title. She has hit homeruns in each of the last four games. She went 3-of-4 with a homerun and four RBI against Fort Lewis College. She also had game-winning home run and went 2-of-3 against Southeastern Oklahoma State University in the championship game.
For the season Barnes leads the Rattlers and the Heartland Conference with six homeruns and 19 RBI. She also ranks third in the league with a .471 batting average. She has hits in all 11 games so far this season. She also has at least one RBI in nine of 11 games this year.
Barnes became the third Rattler to earn Heartland Conference Player of the Week honors so far this season. Kelcy Walker (Jr., San Antonio) was named Hitter of the Week, while Malissa Magee (Jr., Houston) earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the first week of the season.
The Rattlers won their second straight tournament last weekend and now stand 9-2 overall this season. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Wichita Falls to compete in the Mustang Invitational. They will take on East Central University at 10 a.m. and Northeastern State University at 1 p.m. before facing host Midwestern State at 3 p.m. Pool play starts on Saturday and the tournament championship will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
SEASON NOTES: In the Heartland Conference weekly report the Rattlers rank at the top of nearly every individual and team category… St. Mary’s has the top batting average in the league at .326 and has 10 homeruns. The most any other school in the league has is three homeruns… The Rattlers are also at the top of team pitching with a 2.12 ERA, less than half that of second place Incarnate Word… Kelcy Walker leads the league with a .485 batting average, while Barnes is second with a .471… In pitching Magee and Brittany Kettinger (Jr., Azle) rank 1-2 in ERA. Magee is first in wins, ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts.
