SAN ANGELO–Denell Stephens scored 24 points, helping Angelo State University to a big second half and a 69-60 win over St. Mary’s University in non-conference men’s basketball action Tuesday night at the Junell Center.

Trailing 32-28 at the half, Angelo State came out of the locker room firing. They outscored the Rattlers 14-2 over the first 6:10 of the second half to take a commanding 42-34 lead. From there the lead would expand to as much as 17 points before a late Rattler rally cut the deficit to single digits.

The Rattlers controlled play in the first half, leading by as much as five points, while shooting 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from the field.

Latez Williams (Sr., Hamilton, Ohio) led the way for the Rattlers with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots. Allen Coleman (Sr., Corpus Christi) was the only other Rattlers in double figures in scoring with 12 points. Lorenzo Anthony (Jr., San Antonio) had nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Stephens led Angelo State with 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field. Brice Nengsu and Derrick Webster also both had 13 points in the game.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 1-2 this season, while Angelo State improved to 2-0. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday when they host the first round of the St. Mary’s Thanksgiving Classic at Bill Greehey Arena. The Rattlers will face Rhema Bible College at 7:30 p.m.
