TOPEKA, Kan. — The Lady Rattlers overcame a number of obstacles this season, but defeating the nation’s defending champions proved too difficult a task.

St. Mary’s (17-13) on Friday fell to No. 1-ranked Washburn 92-58 in the NCAA Division II regional quarterfinals at Lee Arena.

“Nobody expected these girls to even be here,” coach Paige Clawson said. “They had so many ups and downs throughout the year, but they now know what it takes to get here.”

Washburn (31-0) led by as many as 45 and set an NCAA Division II record with its 50th consecutive victory.

Flavia Azinheira led the Lady Rattlers with 12 points. Natalie Gamez scored 11.
