San Antonio – Taryn Munoz tossed a three-hit shutout in the first game, while Alyssa Alfaro led an offensive attack that included three homeruns as St. Mary’s University swept a Heartland Conference doubleheader in softball against Texas A&M International University, 3-0, 11-2, Friday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Softball Field.

Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) was in command throughout the first game. She allowed just three hits and 3 walks, while striking out 7. She improved to 18-12 this season with the win. She was in serious trouble just once in the game. In the first inning, Brianna Sanchez led off with a double. One out later, Victoria Beltran and Samantha Carrillo walked to load the bases. But Munoz responded by striking out the next two batters to get out of the jam. From there Flores allowed just two hits and one walk the rest of the way to pick up her third shutout of the season.

Alfaro (Jr., Eagle Pass, Texas) led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Her solo homerun to lead off in the second inning was all the offense the Rattlers would need. She added an RBI single in the third inning that gave the Rattlers a 2-0 lead. Christina Rodriguez (Fr., San Antonio) drove home the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

In the second game, the Rattlers ran out to an early lead, and then put the game away with seven runs in the fourth inning, leading to a run-rule victory. Crystal Keller (Fr., La Coste, Texas) picked up her fifth victory of the season, allowing one earned run on four hits and six walks, while striking out two. Kelly Baker (Jr., Arlington, Texas) smashed a 3-run homerun, while Sarah Perez (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) had a 2-run homerun.

With the sweep St. Mary’s improved to 30-19 overall and 15-5 in Heartland Conference play. TAMIU fell to 20-28, 14-6. The Rattlers are now just one-half game behind league leading St. Edward’s University after the Hilltoppers split a doubleheader against the University of the Incarnate Word Friday. If the Rattlers defeat the Dustdevils and UIW defeats St. Edward’s, the Rattlers will win the Heartland Conference regular season title.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series with a single game Saturday at noon at St. Mary’s University Softball Field. The game will be broadcast live over the internet on the Rattler Athletics site.
