San Antonio – Five sets, 102 points and two comebacks – and it still wasn’t quite enough for the St. Mary’s Rattlers volleyball team Saturday.

Nearly going point for point with Dallas Baptist University, the Rattlers eventually fell 2-3 (21-25, 25-18, 24-26, 26-24, 6-15) in a hard-fought, back-and-forth contest before a crowd of nearly 200 at Bill Greehey Arena.

St. Mary’s (6-13, 2-4 in Heartland Conference) rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to force a fifth and final set against the Patriots, who won to improve to 11-12 and 4-1 in conference.

Allie Murray (So., San Antonio) led the Rattlers with 24 digs, while Kori McCarver (Sr., San Antonio) posted a team-high 45 assists. Karlie Ortega (Fr., San Antonio) was one of four players with double-figure kills, recording 15.

Kirsten Chapman (Jr., Jourdanton, Texas) had 14 kills, while Kate Kershner (Sr., San Antonio) had 12 and Stephanie Proske (Jr., LaGrange, Texas) recorded 10.

Kershner also had 18 digs, while Ortega added 16. McCarver and Luisa Rodrigues (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil) also had 10 apiece.

Chapman also posted a team-best .444 hitting percentage.

St. Mary’s returns to the court Tuesday, when it will host the University of the Incarnate Word in its annual “Dig Pink” event, which supports breast cancer awareness.
