Awards will provide full tuition, annual stipend to servant-leaders
The St. Mary’s University School of Law will present as many as five, full-tuition Presidential Scholarships each year to service-oriented law students, starting as early as Fall 2014.

The Presidential Scholarship is open to any law school applicant of outstanding academic achievement, commitment to the service to others, and potential for a life of community leadership.

The scholarship will cover 100 percent of the tuition and fees required to complete the Juris Doctor degree at St. Mary’s University, as well as a $5,000 annual stipend for students in the three-year Day Program ($4,000 per year for students in the four-year Evening Program). Recipients will be expected to be active in the law school community while a student and to complete their legal study at St. Mary’s.

The recruitment initiative is one of the first at St. Mary’s for Stephen M. Sheppard, J.S.D., who began his tenure as dean in early June.

“At St. Mary’s, we measure both quantitative and qualitative success,” Sheppard said. “These scholarships underscore our Marianist mission and the ‘value-added’ component most law schools don’t have. We not only expect our students to graduate, we want them to pursue a lifetime of leadership and successful practice in service to mankind. Those are the type of students we wish to attract.”

The Presidential Scholarship may be held by a law student planning to enter public service or the private sector, if the student demonstrates a commitment to community leadership and service to others. Recipients must maintain a cumulative letter grade of a B or higher.

The process of selection for a Presidential Scholarship begins with either an inquiry to the School of Law admission office or by submitting a completed application and curriculum vitae once an application for admission has been submitted. An interview with University President Thomas Mengler, J.D., or his designee will be required, though in some circumstances it may be conducted by telephone or Internet.
