The St. Mary’s University Music and Drama departments brought Jonathan Larson’s Tony Award-winning RENT to the University’s Treadaway Recital Hall for a series of dates beginning April 11, 2013. The musical was directed by drama Professor Adam Burke, with musical direction under Professor Jacob Cantu, choreography by Drama Chair Bernadette Hamilton-Brady, and scenic and lighting design by Dion Denevan.

The rock musical details highs and lows of young performers living in New York City’s East Village in the late 1980s and early 1990s. RENT, based on Giacomo Puccini’s La bohéme, first hit the stage in 1994 and became a Broadway hit in 1996. Larson, who died suddenly before the Off-Broadway premiere in January 1996, was awarded three Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama posthumously.
