Third-year St. Mary’s law student Mallory Myers recently attended a ceremony at the White House honoring the 5,000th Daily Point of Light Award presentation – an invitation extended to only 20 of the previous award winners.

The ceremony celebrated the award’s milestone and the vision of former President George H.W. Bush, who began the tradition 23 years ago to celebrate Americans who find ways to serve others and give back to their communities in innovative ways. President Barack Obama and Mrs. Obama hosted the event to honor President Bush’s contribution to the service movement throughout the nation.

Myers, who won the award while at student at Texas A&M University in 2009, was chosen to represent Texas. Myers won a Daily Point of Light award in her capacity as the executive director of the Big Event, the largest one-day, student-run service project in the nation. Myers is currently a member of the St. Mary’s Law Journal and the Board of Advocates, and will graduate in May 2014 with plans to pursue a career in public service.
