San Antonio – Bad weather and an Angelo State rally Friday put a damper on the positive vibes the St. Mary’s softball team had going for it following a season-opening rally the night before.

St. Mary’s watched the Rambelles overcome a four-run deficit with 10 unanswered runs for a stunning 11-5 victory on the second day of the St. Mary’s College Classic, held at the SAISD Sports Complex.

The nightcap against East Central was called off with the Rattlers trailing 1-0 in the second inning due to lightning in the area.

It wasn’t long into the first game that it looked like the Rattlers (1-1) would be the ones winning decisively.

Freshman third baseman Nicole Sardelich (Angleton, Texas) drilled a bases-clearing double to left-center field to take a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

But the Rambelles (1-2) answered with three runs of their own in the top of the next frame before blowing the doors open with a six-run showing in the sixth.

DeeshanaLynn Tafiti provided the fireworks during the run, blasting a two-run shot way over the left-field wall.

St. Mary’s Vianna Gutierrez (Fr., San Antonio) got tagged with the loss in her first college action after relieving Maricela Bissaro (So., San Antonio), who struck out two and was charged with four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Sardelich was 2 for 3 on the day, while designated hitter Heather Haas (Jr., Shiner, Texas) drove in a pair of runs on a 1-for-3 outing.

Barring weather delays, the tournament will wrap up Saturday with St. Mary’s hosting Southeastern State at 4 p.m. and Cameron at 6 p.m.
