San Antonio – A five-run second inning by Incarnate Word was too much for the St. Mary’s softball team to overcome Wednesday night, as the Rattlers fell 5-2 to their cross-town rivals.

Taylor Vidrine (Fr., San Antonio) went 2 for 4 with an RBI in the defeat, while Shelly Lee Zawadzki (Jr., San Antonio) and Vianna Gutierrez (Fr., San Antonio) also had multi-hit outings.

St. Mary’s (10-8) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off Alex Garcia’s (Jr., San Antonio) RBI triple to right field, but the lead was short-lived as UIW (9-4) struck with five runs in the bottom of the frame.

Vidrine drove in the Rattlers’ second run in the fifth, but that was all St. Mary’s would put on the board despite outhitting Incarnate Word 8-3.

Gutierrez struck out four, but was hung with the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season.

St. Mary’s will be back in action Saturday and Sunday at the Missouri Southern Crossover in Joplin, Mo.
