San Antonio – In a huge turnout to their first game of the season, St. Mary’s put on a show, in particular Daryell Taylor, on the road to defeat crosstown rival Incarnate Word.

To compliment their first victory on the season and Taylor’s (Sr., Houston) big showing, the league has named the senior this week’s Heartland Conference Player of the Week.

Taylor had a huge opening night for the Rattlers, scoring 27 points on 4-of-6 shooting from downtown to go along with four assists, two boards and a steal against Incarnate Word. Taylor shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the game, playing in all but two minutes of the contest.

Taylor’s efforts accounted for nearly a third of the Rattlers’ (1-0) points against the aspiring-Division I Cardinals, marking a career-high 27 points and his first-ever Player of the Week award from the conference. But Taylor’s work in the game opener is just a continuation from his junior year last season, as he was ranked No.15 in conference in scoring and was among the Rattlers’ main contributors. As he was also No. 10 in the league for 3-pointers last season, Taylor has already begun his tally with four on the season, all made during the Incarnate Word victory.

This week’s Player of the Week and the rest of the Rattlers take on their first home game of the season tonight against Concordia University at 7:30 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
