San Antonio – Back-to-back St. Edward’s goals sullied what was an impressive start for the Rattlers on Thursday.

Deadlocked in a scoreless men’s soccer affair early in the second half, the Hilltoppers struck with consecutive goals over a 47-second stretch en route to winning the “Battle of the Saints” matchup 3-0 at the Northside ISD Soccer Field.

Andrew Fox scored the first of two goals at the 49:13 mark, while Daniel Riley answered in the 51st minute to give the Hilltoppers (5-3-1, 2-1 in Heartland Conference) a 2-0 lead. Fox tacked on a third goal in the 73rd minute against the Rattlers, who fought hard despite watching their two-game win streak come to an end.

The loss gives St. Mary’s a 2-5-1 record on the season, including 1-2-1 in league play.

St. Mary’s goalkeeper Patrick Kasperitis (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) recorded three saves in 90 minutes in the net, while Jack Wolf (Fr., Richardson, Texas) led the team’s offensive charge with two shots on goal. St. Edward’s outshot the Rattlers 9-6 in a defensive battle that was scoreless in the half.

The Rattlers will be back in action Saturday, when they host Dallas Baptist at 2:30 p.m. at the NISD Soccer Field.
