San Antonio – Kirby Gorzell already had a first-place trophy in his grasp. The St. Mary’s freshman now has a prestigious award, too.

Gorzell, a San Antonio native, has been named the Heartland Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

He won the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational individual title on Tuesday, shooting a 1-under-par 70 to erase a five-stroke deficit and claim the first title of his collegiate career. His performance helped fuel the Rattlers to a third-place finish as a team at the event, hosted by West Texas A&M.

Gorzell shot 209 for the tournament, overtaking St. Edward’s Jose Hernandez for the title. The player of the week award marks the first of Gorzell’s career.
