San Antonio – “The Big O” won a big award on Monday.

Kathryn Galindo, the affable St. Mary’s forward, has been named the Heartland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Galindo, a sophomore from Antonian High School in San Antonio, scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench in a 75-63 victory over Texas A&M International last week. The former walk-on was the first Lady Rattler to win the weekly award this season.

Galindo was nicknamed “The Big O” in high school by then- and- current-teammate Liz Boyd for being a “big oxymoron” because Boyd believed Galindo’s bubbly personality did not match her 6-foot-2 frame.

But Galindo has made a different name for herself this year, emerging as one of the Lady Rattlers’ most potent players off the bench, averaging 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

The fourth-seeded Lady Rattlers (13-15, 8-4 in Heartland Conference) will play top-seeded Newman in the Heartland Conference semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Wichita, Kan. The championship game will follow the next day.
